Spotlight: waterproof Faraday bag

SLNT Faraday Dry Bag, Waterproof Roll-Top Faraday Bag, 2.5L, 5L and 10L

If you want one bag that keeps a phone, radio or backup drive both dry and dark, this is the one we point people to. It is a roll-top dry bag rated to be submerged, with SLNT's tested Faraday lining inside, in three sizes from glove box to day bag. Independent reviewers soaked it, rained on it and tried to call through it, and it held up every time. We liked SLNT's gear enough to make it the only Faraday brand we carry.

Why it earns the spotlight

Dry and dark in one bag

Most Faraday bags block signals but not water, and most dry bags keep out water but not signals. This one does both: RF-welded seams and 420D waterproof nylon, rated to be submerged to 10 feet for up to 30 minutes.

Shielding with published test data

The Multishield lining is rated at more than 100 dB and tested to MIL-STD-188-125-2 and IEEE 299-2006 from 1 to 40 GHz. In CAT Outdoors' testing, a two-way radio inside got zero reception from 12 inches away, a phone could not take a call and an AirTag vanished from Find My.

A roll-top that is hard to get wrong

Seal the top, roll it down three times and clip it. The same motion that keeps water out closes the Faraday cage, so there is no fiddly hook-and-loop flap to misalign.

Built to carry, not just store

A detachable 55 inch sling strap, a MOLLE loop for a light or bottle, an exterior zip pocket for cards and cash, and an optional padded insert to keep devices from knocking together.

Goes through airport security with you

Faraday bags are allowed through airport security, and the Multishield lining blocks radio signals, not X-rays, so the Dry Bag screens like any other bag in your carry-on. Through crowded terminals and on the plane, your phone, passport and cards stay sealed where nothing can ping, track or scan them.

How it compares

Every bag here uses the same SLNT shielding. The Dry Bag is the most versatile of them: small enough to live in a go bag or glove box, big enough for several devices, and sealed against water as well as signal. Step up to the backpack or duffel for more room, or to the EMP bag for storing larger power gear at home.

Questions people ask

Does the SLNT Faraday Dry Bag really block signals?

Yes. SLNT rates the Multishield lining at more than 100 dB, tested to MIL-STD-188-125-2 and IEEE 299-2006. CAT Outdoors put a two-way radio inside and transmitted from 12 inches away with zero reception. A phone inside could not receive a call, and an AirTag disappeared from Find My.

Why does Sagamore Trading carry SLNT?

We compared the Faraday brands we could carry and liked SLNT enough to drop the others. It publishes its shielding test data, its gear holds up in independent testing, and it is built to be carried every day, not just stored. We are adding SLNT bags as options in our Get Home Bag, Stay Home Kit and Go Bag soon.

Is it really waterproof?

Yes. It is RF-welded 420D waterproof nylon, rated to be submerged to 10 feet for up to 30 minutes when the top is rolled three times and clipped. CAT Outdoors left it under a sprinkler and walked it through the rain, and the inside stayed dry.

How do I seal it properly?

Put devices in the main compartment, press the top edges together so the lining meets across the full width, roll the top down three full turns and clip the buckles. Then call the phone inside. It should go straight to voicemail.

Which size should I get?

The 2.5 L holds a phone, a radio and keys. The 5 L, the size most reviewers test, adds room for a second phone, a power bank and a backup drive. The 10 L suits a household's phones, radios and chargers.

Can I take the SLNT Dry Bag through airport security?

Yes. Faraday bags are not on the TSA's prohibited list, so you can carry the Dry Bag on or check it. The Multishield lining blocks radio signals, not X-rays, so it goes through the scanner like any other bag. As with any carry-on, an officer may ask you to open it, and laptops and large electronics follow the normal screening rules for your lane.

Can I keep my phone in it on the plane?

Yes. A phone sealed in the Dry Bag cannot connect to anything, which also stops the Bluetooth and background pings airplane mode can leave on. Take it out when you want to use it, and roll the top three times again when you put it back.

What should I seal in it when I travel?

Your phone and any backup phone, your passport and cards, car and house keys, and a power bank. In a terminal, hotel or rental car, anything inside the sealed main compartment cannot be located, skimmed or connected to.

Will it protect electronics from an EMP or solar flare?

SLNT rates the lining to shield against EMP, high-altitude EMP and solar flares, and the material is tested to MIL-STD-188-125-2, a military standard for EMP shielding. Seal it fully, and store devices powered off.

Can I use or charge my phone while it is inside?

No. Once the bag is sealed, nothing inside can send or receive a signal. Take the device out to use it, and power it off or switch on airplane mode before longer storage.

What is the outside pocket for?

The zippered exterior pocket is for cards, cash or a pen. It is not shielded, so anything that should stay dark goes in the main compartment.

Who makes it?

SLNT, formerly Silent Pocket, which holds patents on its Silent Pocket Faraday cage design. The bag carries SLNT's 1-year limited warranty.
