Everything else in preparedness assumes one thing: that you can carry it. The bag is the platform the whole kit rides on, and the wrong one turns a good loadout into a burden you set down. It matters more than people think, and it's worth getting right before you fill it.

Match the carry to the situation. A get home bag should look ordinary, plain enough to draw no attention on a normal day. A go bag needs to carry three days comfortably on your back and survive being loaded and unloaded for years. A vehicle kit wants organization over portability, since it lives in the trunk. And what you reach for in seconds, like medical, belongs on the outside, not buried at the bottom.
