Family & Kids
Family emergency preparedness requires more than multiplying food and water by the number of people in the household. Children may need formula, diapers, medications, comfort items, weather-specific clothing, and age-appropriate supplies that must be reviewed and replaced as they grow. A family emergency kit should be updated at least once a year and should include enough water, food, hygiene supplies, lighting, and medication for every household member. Just as important is a clear family communication plan. Choose meeting locations, write down emergency contacts, and give each family member a printed card with essential phone numbers and addresses in case phones are lost, damaged, or out of power. Older children can carry a small light, whistle, identification card, and a manageable portion of their own supplies. Familiarity and practice help children feel more capable and less frightened when routines are disrupted.
