Supply Chain Disruptions and Preparedness in an Uncertain World

Most of us have a mental model of how things get to us, and it is wrong.

The model goes something like this: there is a warehouse somewhere, it is large, and it is full. When we need something, a truck brings it. If the truck is late, another truck comes tomorrow.

The real model is leaner than that. Modern retail runs on inventory that is measured in days, not months. A grocery store carries roughly three days of goods on the shelf. The rest of it is moving, sitting on a ship, waiting at a port, riding on a truck that is currently between two cities. The system is remarkably efficient and it works nearly all of the time. That efficiency is exactly what makes it thin.

You have probably already watched this happen. Not in a crisis, just on a Tuesday. A single ingredient becomes unavailable for four months. A car part is quoted at eleven weeks. A common medication is suddenly on allocation and your pharmacy cannot tell you when it will be back. None of those were disasters. They were friction, and friction is the normal state of a long chain with many links.

What makes the current moment worth a second look is not any single headline. It is that several of the links are under pressure at once. Shipping lanes get rerouted. Tariffs and trade rules shift the economics of where things are made. Manufacturing capacity for certain categories, including some pharmaceuticals and electronics, sits concentrated in a small number of places. When you concentrate production and you also thin out inventory, you get a system that is fast and cheap and has very little slack.

I want to be careful here, because this is the point where preparedness writing usually goes off the rails. I am not predicting a collapse. I do not think you need a bunker. The far more likely version of this, and the version that actually shows up in people's lives, is much more boring: the thing you wanted is not available for a while, and the substitute is worse or costs more.

That is a solvable problem. It is solved with depth, not drama.

Depth means owning a little more of what you already use. Not different things. More of the same things. If your household goes through a bottle of something every six weeks, keeping two on hand costs you almost nothing and removes an entire category of small emergency. This is the least glamorous idea in preparedness and by far the most useful.

Depth means knowing your actual dependencies. Sit down for ten minutes and write out what would genuinely be difficult to replace on short notice. For most households the honest list is short: prescription medications, a specific piece of medical equipment, contact lenses, pet medication, one or two food items tied to an allergy or a condition, batteries in an unusual size. Everything else has a substitute at the hardware store. Knowing which five things matter is more valuable than owning fifty things that do not.

Depth means separating what you can store from what you cannot. Some things store beautifully for years and cost almost nothing to keep: water treatment, fuel canisters, batteries, basic medical supplies, shelf-stable calories. Other things do not store well, and for those the answer is a workaround rather than a stockpile. You cannot warehouse refrigeration. You can own a way to keep a cooler cold and a plan for what leaves the freezer first.

Depth is cumulative and it is quiet. Nobody needs to know you did it. There is no moment of dramatic vindication. The payoff is that a disruption which would have cost you a frustrating afternoon and a premium price simply does not register.

The uncomfortable truth about supply chains is that they are optimized for the average day and we all live in them on the assumption that every day is average. Adding a few weeks of slack on your end is not paranoia. It is the same instinct that makes you keep a spare tire in a car that has never had a flat.

Start with the five things on your list. Buy one extra of each. That is the whole assignment.
