There is a number that shows up in nearly every official emergency guide: 72 hours. Be ready to be self-sufficient for three days.
It is easy to read that as a bureaucratic round number. It is not. It is a working estimate of how long it takes organized help to reach everyone in an affected area, and 2025 gave us several unusually clear looks at how that window behaves in practice.
January 7, Los Angeles. The Palisades and Eaton fires ignited hours apart, driven by a severe Santa Ana wind event. Roughly 100,000 people were under evacuation orders for each fire. The two fires together burned about 59 square miles and destroyed more than 16,000 structures. What mattered most for individual households was not the total acreage. It was the pace. In Altadena, people left neighborhoods and care facilities on very short notice, some on foot, in wind strong enough to make it hard to stand or see. The decision window in that kind of event is measured in minutes, and the first hours are entirely yours.
January 5 and 6, from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic. Winter Storm Blair pushed a coast-to-coast snow and ice band across the middle of the country. Roughly 365,000 customers lost power, from Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois through Kentucky and into Virginia, Maryland, and Washington. Interstates closed. Kentucky State Police reported over 280 stranded motorists. Utility crews worked continuously, and in the harder-hit areas restoration was still measured in days rather than hours, because ice on a line adds hundreds of pounds and takes down poles and trees along with it.
The same week, in a different form. Richmond, Virginia lost water service after storm damage to its distribution facilities. This is the failure mode people rarely plan for. Power comes back and the tap still does not work, or works but the water is not safe. A city water system is infrastructure like any other, and it can go down.
Three different events, three different regions, one consistent shape.
Hour zero to hour six is entirely self-directed. Whether the event is a fire or an ice storm, the first hours are you making decisions with incomplete information. There is no one coming yet, and there should not be. Responders are triaging. This is the window your go-bag exists for, and it is the window in which most preparedness failures actually happen, not from lack of gear but from lack of a decision already made.
Hour six to hour twenty-four is when the picture gets clearer and the resources get thin. Stores in the affected area are closed or emptied. Roads are restricted. Gas stations without power cannot pump. Whatever you have with you is what you have.
Hour twenty-four to hour seventy-two is the restoration grind. Crews are working. Shelters are open. Help exists but it is not evenly distributed, and it reaches dense areas before it reaches everyone else. This is the stretch where comfort items stop being luxuries. Warmth, light, a way to charge a phone, food that does not require cooking, and a way to make water safe.
The practical takeaway is smaller than it sounds. Seventy-two hours of readiness for a typical household is not a garage full of supplies. It is:
- Water for three days, or a treatment method plus a container
- Food that requires no power and minimal preparation
- A light source per person that is not a phone
- A charged power bank, ideally two
- A radio that works without the internet
- Warmth that does not depend on the furnace
- Medications, in a container you can pick up and carry
- Copies of the documents you would need to prove who you are and what you own
None of that is exotic. Most households already own two thirds of it, scattered across four rooms. The work is not acquisition. It is consolidation, so that at hour zero you are picking something up rather than assembling it.
If you do one thing after reading this, put the medications and the documents together in one place. That is the item people consistently forget and consistently regret.
